I originally purchased them years ago to use on a 5 week studies abroad program. I thought they would be great for quick sketch studies but did not use them a whole lot. I did make a monotype with them but my fields of study were stone lithography and bronze casting.
You know us artists, we never get rid of art supplies as we will eventually use them. I have played around with them but decided to use them for a watercolor under painting for some small pastels. These can be used opaquely or thinly as you would generally think of a watercolor painting.

I use them a bit differently. I peal the paper back and dip the crayon in water and then paint with them directly onto the paper without a brush. You have to constantly dip them in water but it works well and I don't have to rinse out a brush. You can layer colors as well as mix them to create new colors on the paper. I am having fun with this and hope that you will give it a try as well. This will also work well for Plein Air Painting, all I need to tone my paper is these crayons, a container, and water. Simple!!

Hope you enjoy my small paintings that follow.

Virginia L. It was done on a piece of Wallis that was already toned red ( A bit redundant) I think the under painting would work best on the white Wallis paper or the Buff U-Art paper. But I had this piece already cut to size and wanted to dive right in and not waste time cutting more paper. The size for all these small paintings measures 6x6 inches.
It is amazing what you can do with a small set of these watercolor crayons. I have done a few others and like them even without going over them with pastel.

Virginia L. I used Art Spectrum Paper in the sienna color. As you can see the texture of the paper is considerably different then the Wallis paper in the images that follow. I added water to front of the marsh as it appeared to work best for this night version. I did very little under painting on this one. On the inside of the doors is where I have framing corner samples. These are mainly for clients that
I do custom framing for. I started the framing business for other artists to fill their needs for affordable framing. I tend to stay within using 3 different profiles so as to keep the look of my work consistent as well as branded.

My wall mounted glass cutter in on the right side wall (hard to see). My glass is stacked on the floor just below it.

The back wall has shelving all the way to the ceiling (Step ladder needed to reach the top for lesser used items) . Here, I store my oil panel carriers about 7 for varying sizes. You can also see my plein air cart, small table on top of that as well as two travel easels in bags. There is my roll of backer paper on the floor as well as large framed art on the left wall.

I also have an oils tote, large plastic bags with pre-mounted pastel paper on foam core hanging from a hook. There is a whole lot more art supplies in here as well.

Thanks for taking a look into my storage and seeing how I organize the chaos.

Virginia L. It measures 4 ft. x 8 ft. My husband built it for me. It too is on locking casters so I can easily move it around. The legs are wooden decking posts ( found on clearance at Home Depot for $2.50 a piece) the ball on the top of the post was cut off. The frame to hold the 4x8 ft sheet of plywood is made from 2x6's. The top hangs over the frame so I could staple indoor/outdoor carpet around to underneath the top. I draped the sides as to have a space underneath for finished art stored in containers.

On top of the table is my matt cutter. Just past the table is a high parsons table with small framed oils on display as well as a file cabinet next to that.

The single door leads to the outside so clients can come right into my studio and not through my home.

The double doors are more storage. ( will show that on another day)

I keep my studio neat because it enters into the kitchen and also because I like to start each day of painting in an uncluttered space. ( It helps with my thinking )

I hoped you have enjoyed your short tour of my studio space and thanks for taking your time to view and read it.

BIG OOPS !! I forgot that this posts downward so the last photo and post was supposed to be the first and so on. ( SO you are reading from the bottom up )

Oh well, It really doesn't matter!!!

Virginia L. This is a great location for it as I can really back away from my work. ( which I do about every 5 min.) The table in front of my easel (Yard sale for $5.00) was put on casters to raise it up as well as make it easy to move around. This table has plate glass on it which I use as my large oil palette.

The rolling caddy, on the left, is a great height as well. It has 2 adjustable chrome shelves with a wooden top. It is a microwave cart from Target.(much less expensive then one designed specifically for artists It keeps all my oil paints handy as well as tape and clips which hang off of hooks built into the cart.

The black draped unit to the right (thrift store find) Has a lid that opens up which my large studio pastel box rests on as well as vertical space storage below for pastel panels.

Virginia L. This space, back in the 70's was originally a 2 car carport and then I guess in the 80's was made into an enclosed 2 car garage. It was morphed once again into my studio space which I think was for the better. I will be posting 5 photos today so that you can get a peek into my favorite room of my home.

I love the brick walls as it gives me the feeling of a SoHo, NY loft.

This first photo shows my studio right side wall as you step down from the kitchen. You see my awesome large work table ( more about that later) and storage cabinets which are recycled, repainted old kitchen cabinets.

Virginia L. I have been working hard at many new oils and pastel paintings on my hiatus. I guess it boils down to, I rather paint then do computer work but I am now motivated to keep up with my blog and share my new and future paintings with you.
I will be posting my smaller works on this site and will direct you to my website; www.virginiadauth.com to view larger pieces.

These smaller pieces will be priced very attractively and I hope that you enjoy viewing then.

I was so excited to have 3 minor snowfalls in South Carolina this winter. Snow only lasts at most 2 days and then is gone. I have enjoyed painting all the wonderful colors which snow presents, a welcome change from all the greens of spring and summer. This 5x7, unframed oil titled Tractor Path is of a farm near my house and available for $100.00

Virginia L. This year I vow to do a better job at keeping up with my blog and getting new paintings up for your viewing pleasure.

As of late Artists have to wear many hats and I will be doing so as well, with lining up teaching dates, workshops and getting a body of work in oils together.

So please stay tuned and return in a while to view not only my pastels but 5 x7, 6x8 and 8x10 oils as well.

Virginia L.
